A single stage furnace operates very similar to most home heating systems. They fire at 100% power and heat the home until the thermostat is satisfied. Fan speeds are fixed and can only be changed by adjustments on the circuit board.

A 2 Stage furnace was designed to provide more even temperature in your home. They fire at low and high power based on the temperature demand and length of time the system is running. Fan speeds are fixed, but they adjust automatically to high or low based on which power level is running.

A Variable Speed furnace was designed similar to a 2 Stage unit, but with the addition of a Variable Speed blower. Variable speed blowers run on DC current and have no fixed speed. They adjust themselves automatically and use far less electricity than a standard blower.

A Modulating furnace was designed similar to a variable speed unit, but these furnaces have no set stages. They continuously ramp up and down based on outdoor temperature, indoor demand and indoor air temperatures. They use DC motors in conjunction with a modulating gas valve to provide the most even temperature in your home.
